Kikka and puppies (week 3a, 2006)

,
In week 3, the eyes begin to see real things. The "wonder of seeing" is obvious, but that doesn't last very long, as it is replaced by the "wonder of hearing".
The puppies begin to react to sounds around them, which is when we begin making sounds on purpose, so they get used to that.
This week they had their second nail clipping and also their first de-worming.
Please be adviced, that we might take a few days on responding to e-mails from friends and family.
We thank You for Your patience.
We do currently not respond to new puppy inquiries.

The puppies
The girls still sleep lots, but they are starting to have more things on their agenda, when they are awake. For one thing, seeing sparks the interest of the world outside the box. They constantly seek to the edges and look over, obviously discontent with, that there must be things outside, which they are missing out on.
Both girls are also making great strides in walking, and can take many "real steps" and get more and more solid by the day. The puppies start in the middle of this week, to have brief stays outside the box, and they start to have "puppy mush" presented to them. They can begin to lick up a tiny bit at a time of the mushy food, and find the flavor very interesting.
Calamity Jane is already a happy go lucky little puppy. Nothing seems to affect her much, getting outside of the box just sparked her curiousity to investigate everything, she took off like she had places to go right away. She is cuddly and calm, and has just now taught herself to growl, which she does find extremely entertaining.
Annie Oakley is more of an opinionated little lady. She does sort of check on new things for a bit, and then she will have something to say about it...usually a loud bark or a growl is what she finds appropriate for just about everything new. She likes to be padded and wags her little tail, when she sees a hand, but being held is sometimes "a waste of time", when there are other things to do.

Week 3 was "Maddy's week".
The barrier between the puppy box and the rest of the house is now removed during the day time. This is a "gradual event", happens in stages, as Maddy is able to get closer and closer. Kikka is still very on alert, that Maddy doesn't get too close, but we did have a few meetings between her and puppies go well.
When Maddy meets the puppies, she is so excited, wagging her entire butt. She "noses" them to smell and get to know them, and she gives them little gentle kisses in the face. When Kikka says enough, she respects that, but she never goes far, always following along, hoping to meet them again soon.
It is our goal to bring the family together in the kitchen as soon as possible after the puppies are 3 weeks old. We're getting closer, little by little, step by step.

No, Kikka is not using Annie as a head rest...
This is a silent way of protecting and claiming ownership, Maddy is getting closer, and Kikka is not quite ready to let go
"puppy pile" is hard to do with only 2
But the girls always sleep close together
Can they come out to me?
Maddy knows the established rules, she can meet the puppies outside the box, but not go into the box.
Maddy longing by the gate
The step before moving the barrier, Maddy longing to meet
Walkabout
"Hey Sis, when we get bigger we'll need those leashes over there to go for walks"
Meeting Auntie Maddy
Hey, this Aunt out here is pretty cool!
First meal
"Whoa, this is different, not bad huh?"
This is how it's done
Kikka showing Annie how to do it
Calamity Jane already a lap dog
She can almost get up by herself
I want out!
And she can also almost get out of the box by herself
Annie Oakley, different tactics
She was headed out, but found a comfy spot to rest.
Outnumbered
Playing attack and "kill" is safe as long as Mom is sleeping
